ABOUT LARAMIE, WYOMING
Jacques LaRamie, a French-Canadian trapper, set out one day to explore an area of the North Platte River and never returned. He was apparently very well liked, as the area he explored was later named the Laramie River. The Laramie River has its origins high in the Laramie Mountains of northern Colorado.
In 1836, Fort Laramie was established as a military outpost and safe haven for Western Settlers traveling along the Oregon Trail. In 1866 Fort Saunders built the first permanent settlement in the area. This fort was constructed two miles south of the present day town of Laramie.
Today Laramie is the third largest city in Wyoming and home to the University of Wyoming. At an elevation of over 7000 feet, Laramie and the University of Wyoming have the highest college football stadium in the Nation. University of Wyoming was named one of the top Universities in the nation by a leading educational magazine. Laramie is a bustling University town that still retains its small town western charm.
